World Rainforest Movement | Friday, 05 September 2008

tools for actionDear friends,

This coming 21 September we will once again be marking the International Day Against Monoculture Tree Plantations.

As a way of raising awareness about the different kinds of impacts suffered by communities in countries around the world as a result of monoculture tree plantations, we at WRM, Friends of the Earth and the Global Forest Coalition invite you to join in this worldwide day of protest.

stop_tree_monocultures.jpgYou may be wondering what you can do on this day. There are a wide variety of activities that can be planned in our different countries and communities. While the activities chosen will depend upon the possibilities of each one of us, there are a number of ideas that we would like to share with you. For example:

- Meetings about plantations (conferences, seminars, workshops).

- Media activities (press releases, press conferences, interviews with newspapers, radio and TV programmes, internet articles).

- Public events (in urban and rural areas) to inform the public about the impacts of plantations.

- Dissemination of testimonials from people affected by plantations.

- Meetings with government representatives.

However there are also very simple things that can be done at an individual level, such us:

- Hanging a sign/banner in the window of your office or home.

- Putting a bumper sticker on your vehicle.

- Sending your email contacts a message about the meaning of the International Day Against Monoculture Tree Plantations.

- Placing a banner on your website and on blogs.

We are preparing a series of tools that can help you to organize the kind of activities we have recommended. If you would like to receive them, please do not hesitate to contact us

In addition, remember that WRM has two other tools already developed that are available for use at:

1) The video “Mountains of Paper, Mounting Injustice” (Available at: http://www.wrm.org.uy/Videos/Paper_Consumption.html)

2) The “Appeal from literature and journalism for socially and environmentally clean paper” (Available at: http://www.wrm.org.uy/plantations/writers.html)

Please feel free to write to us if you need further information.

Kind regards,

The WRM Team
