Carbon trading is a complex system with a simple goal: to make it cheaper for companies to continue polluting. The carbon market has fielded perhaps the largest avenue for businesses to earn money while polluting. This workshop will examine some of the largest carbon trading criminal acts to date taking an in-depth look at the corruption inherent in the system, ways in which the Clean Development Mechanism has perpetuated the criminalisation of resistance on the ground, the breakdown of the market and how climate finance has functioned to rig the system throughout Kyoto’s history.

to play in the agreement being discussed at at the UN climate summit in
Copenhagen in December? What role does the World Bank play in
promoting carbon markets? This workshop provides a critical
introduction to carbon trading, with a particular focus on its place
within a new global treaty. It will show how the Clean Development
Mechanism (CDM), sectoral carbon markets, and schemes aimed at Reducing
Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD) could exacerbate
local social and environmental conflicts and incentivise land grabs
whilst failing to tackle the climate crisis. It will then explore a
range of alternatives from a climate justice perspective.

their corporations depleting the resources of the South for their own
profit while exploiting more than their share of atmospheric capacity.
These same governments and corporations are now pushing for a new
global climate treaty that leaves it to the South to clean up the mess
they have created, while helping them to avoid taking significant
action to reduce their own emissions. This workshop will expose these
schemes -- the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), Reducing Emissions
from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD), soil carbon sequestration,
amongst others -- as false solutions that bring with them social and
environmental conflicts, give incentives for land grabs and exacerbate
inequalities in the South.

Ten ways the EU is failing on climate change... and many more alternatives

The European Union routinely claims “leadership” on climate change. But in creating the world´s largest carbon market, promoting agrofuels and Carbon Capture and Storage as solutions, it is failing to offer environmentally sustainable and socially just alternatives for tackling the climate crisis. This workshop will look at how the EU´s carbon market is failing, show how EU negotiators are contributing to a bad deal in Copenhagen, and highlight how the EU subsidises some of the dirtiest industries in the name of “clean” technology. It will then look at the alternatives needed to promote climate justice in Belgium and The Netherlands, the EU and beyond.

Carbon trading from Kyoto to Copenhagen

The
Kyoto Protocol, drawn up in 1997, laid the groundwork for a global
system of carbon trading that is now worth around $100 billion per
year. The UN´s Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) has almost 1,500
registered projects (with another 3,000 in the pipeline), yet its
record is woeful in both environmental and social terms. This workshop
will begin with a history of the CDM and other market-based mechanisms
for climate mitigation, including a global overview and selected case
studies. It will then critically examine proposals for the reform and
extension of carbon trading within the current UN climate negotiations,
setting out the positions of the various parties on such issues as CDM
reform and sectoral carbon markets (including the possible creation of
forest carbon markets in the guise of Reduced Emissions from
Deforestation and Degradation).

economic system has played an important part in bringing about climate
change. Can we stop climate chaos within the current system using
market mechanisms and technological solutions, or are deeper changes in
the political system and the way we live, work and make decisions
necessary? Can we have a socially just transition to a low carbon
economy? What will the transition to a greener society look like, and
what is the role of social movements in struggling for a such a
transition?

change.
The
UN talks in Copenhagen this December are supposed to be the place where
world leaders agree a new international deal to stop climate change.
But progress so far has been undermined by corporate lobbying and
false, market-based solutions. When activists from across Europe hit
the streets of Copenhagen, should we be calling on governments to do
better, blockading them in until they come up with a good deal, or be
saying they are so flawed we should try to close them down?
